The appeal is simplicity. Kings Beach is a public beach in a real town, not a resort enclave, and its long sand, playground and nearby food make it easy for families. The view stretches across the north end of the lake to the mountains above the West Shore, and the sunsets can be striking. California State Parks has been planning improvements to the pier and to recreational access, so expect some changes in the next few years.
How to do it well: arrive by mid-morning on summer weekends, or use the hourly parking for a shorter visit. Bring a picnic, or walk to the taco and pizza spots along Highway 28. Rent a kayak or paddleboard nearby and launch from the east end on calm mornings, before the afternoon wind comes up. Families should base themselves near the playground. Dog owners should stay east of the boat ramp. Bring a credit card for the pay stations.
Practicals and fit: on Highway 28 in Kings Beach, about 15 minutes east of Tahoe City and a few minutes west of the Nevada line at Crystal Bay. Per-vehicle day-use or hourly parking fees year-round; day use only. Best for families, first-time visitors on the North Shore, paddlers and anyone who wants an easy beach day.
