The fire is part of how to understand the mountain now. When the Caldor Fire crossed Echo Summit in late summer 2021, the fire burned across the resort. The base area and lifts largely survived, but much of the forest around them did not, and the cleanup that followed opened up acres of glades no one had skied before. The reforestation program finished its main planting phase in 2026, and the resort's stated goal is to have all of its trails open again. On the hill you will see open burn-scar glades with wide views next to stands of green forest that survived. The resort's 80th-anniversary season adds throwback events, a history film and a December 21 celebration marking its original opening date.
How to do it well: reserve weekend and holiday parking ahead (it is free with a carpool of four or more), take Highway 50 early on powder mornings before the chain controls back up, and check the resort's new mobile app for the trail map and lift status. Families should book the children's center and kids lessons ahead in peak weeks, and non-skiers can spend the day at the Blizzard Mountain tubing hill, which runs Thursday to Monday in winter, weather permitting. Intermediates should head for the long groomers off the summit and the new open glades and park riders should check the daily terrain park report.
Practicals and fit: about 30 minutes west of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 50, and the most practical ski day for visitors staying near the Y or on the South Shore's west side. On the Ikon Pass, not the Epic. The resort is best for families, intermediates and park riders. Experts will find more at Kirkwood, and lake-view skiing is at Heavenly.

Was Sierra-at-Tahoe damaged by the Caldor Fire?
Its forest was. The 2021 fire burned through much of the mountain's trees, though the lodge and lifts survived. Since then the resort has removed dead trees and planted more than 60,000 saplings, laid out in clusters that will rebuild tree skiing over time.
Is it on the Epic or Ikon Pass?
Ikon. For 2026-27, the full Ikon Pass includes seven days without blackouts, and the Base Pass includes five days with blackout dates. It is the only Ikon mountain on the South Shore.
How far is it from South Lake Tahoe?
About 30 minutes west on Highway 50, below Echo Summit. Storms can bring chain controls, so check Caltrans first.
What is there for non-skiers?
Blizzard Mountain, a tubing and snow-play area, runs Thursday to Monday in winter, weather permitting, and opens on weekends only early in the season.
Do I need a parking reservation?
On weekends and holidays, yes. Reservations are free for passholders and cars with four or more people, and paid for smaller groups.
